After 16 years as a teacher, Danielle Mirabal came up with a brilliant way to both strike out on her own and continue to work with kids: she opened Bounce About, a family entertainment center that offers bounce houses for little ones and laser tag for teens and adults – plus arcade games, birthday parties, and events.
After spending “many endless nights” working on her business plan and perfecting her mission statement, she successfully launched in 2016.
Though after a career in teaching, she had little knowledge about how to start a business, Mirabal created a business plan, secured funding, and designed a successful marketing strategy. She launched successfully in 2016 and now has a state-of-the-art two-story arena for laser tag with 25 programmable game options. She has also designed a membership model to help retain a solid customer base.
Through attending workshops and seminars, and meeting with her SCORE mentor, Mirabal was able to navigate employee labor laws and ensure compliance with New Jersey state law. She also met her marketing and website designer, who she calls her “best asset” through SCORE.
Mirabal advises new small business owners to come up with a list of questions before meeting with a SCORE mentor. “If they don't have the answers they will get you the resources to answer them,” she says.
